Choi Pil-kyu’s Special Invitation Solo Exhibition: “PAPER·WIND·WISH”

Paper is one of the most familiar materials in our lives. This exhibition explores the time, memory, texture, and symbolism embedded in paper. The artworks, though quiet and minimal, leave a strong impression and deep resonance. The exhibition is on view at Gallery Eun (45-1 Insadong-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul) until April 28.
Choi Pil-kyu composes his works by layering, arranging, and stacking paper in various ways. Sometimes, he tears and scatters the paper, or adds brushstrokes freely, creating a playful and expressive style.
Through these processes, paper sheds its original character and transforms into something new. The emotions soaked into the material align with the rhythms of nature, and the artist captures traces of time and hand movements. For Choi, paper is not just a background—it becomes an active vessel that holds and expresses meaning.
The artist shares, “Our desire for happiness becomes paper fluttering in the wind.” He hopes that this exhibition offers a small sense of comfort to those navigating the busy and tangled paths of modern life.
Choi Pil-kyu has served as a professor at Suwon Women’s University and Suwon University Graduate School of Fine Arts, and as a board member of the Hwaseong City Cultural Foundation. His works are held in major public collections including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Seoul Museum of Art, and the Suwon Museum of Art.

紙は、私たちにとって最も身近な素材のひとつです。本展は、紙に込められた時間と記憶、素材としての特性、そして象徴性を表現しています。静かでありながらも深い余韻を残す作品たちが展示されており、観る者の心に強い印象を与えます。展覧会は、ソウル・チョンノ区インサドンギル45-1の「ギャラリー・ウン」にて、4月28日まで開催されています。
チェ・ピルギュ氏は、紙を重ねたり、並べたり、積み上げたりして作品を構成します。時には紙を破ったり、散らしたり、その上に筆で描くなど、自由な表現も見られます。
このような制作過程の中で、紙は本来の性質を失い、新しい物質へと変化します。紙に込められた感情は、自然の流れとつながり、作家はそこに時間の痕跡と手の動きを映し出します。チェ氏にとって紙は、ただの背景ではなく、何かを受け止める主体的な存在です。
作家は「幸せを願う気持ちは、風に舞う紙のように表現される」と語っています。本展では、現代社会を慌ただしく生きる人々に、ささやかな癒しを届けたいという思いが込められています。
チェ・ピルギュ氏は、スウォン女子大学およびスウォン大学美術大学院で教授を務め、ファソン市文化財団の理事も歴任しました。彼の作品は、国立現代美術館、ソウル市立美術館、スウォン市立美術館などに所蔵されています。
