Choi pil-kyu’s White Fantasia: Heun
The paper bands overlapped on the surface of the quadrangular canvas. Choi’s paper bands look like real things but, in fact, they are illusions. The illusions of the paper seem to usher the observers into the world of ideas because of the way the crumpled and torn papers are displayed and depicted. A reality is represented as an illusion where a phenomenon is happening. It could be said to be the nature of art. Just as an artist’s volition is involved in the process that a pipe is represented as a picture of a pipe and an apple as that of an apple, Choi Pil-kyu has made his own peculiar world of an idea representing paper as pictures of paper.
